A Clifftop View of the Magnificent Yoshida River
Joga Keibo, built on a cliff’s edge, offers a superb view overlooking the pristine Yoshida River. It’s difficult to believe a river which runs through the center of town could be so clear, and the refreshing breeze that rises from it is pristine as well. This is an excellent site from which to stroll around the castle town, or join in the famous Gujo Odori dances.
Origin of Joga Keibo
During the 18th century in the Edo period, the feudal lord of Gujo Yoshimichi Aoyama, together with the Confucian scholar Emura Hokka, opened the Senryukan - a school for samurai children. The second-generation professor of the school, Sugioka Tokuso, built a residence in this area and lived under the name “Joga Keibo”. Because of the superb view of Gujo Hachiman, many visiting poets were offered prizes for depicting the scenery, and the “Joga Keibo Collected Poems” was compiled.
